Vessel name: Sarah |
- Samuel recorded as the Captain of vessel named the Sarah. Most likely a canal coal barge. With him is a woman named Mary Ann Hardaker recorded as his wife aged 26. We can find no record of this marriage, and in 1881 we find Samuel living with a Mary Ann Walsh (and her son Henry) at Idle. It seems highly likely that this is the same person implying that the couple were not in fact married.

- Samuel a Canal Boatman (Waterman), living with half-brother William (56), Mary Ann Walsh (34) listed as a servant and Henry Walsh (10) listed as a boarder, but presumably Mary Ann's son. Mary Ann is presumably the person recorded as Samuel's wife (Mary Anne Hardaker) in the 1871 census. Apparently the couple were not in fact married. It seems highly likely that Samuel was the father of Henry.
