    • Samuel Hardaker of Rawdon & Grace Denison of Horsforth. Samuel signed his name, Grace made her mark. Witnesses were William Hardaker and Peter Hudson (both signed). The signature of William Hardaker is an approximate match to the William Hardaker who witnessed the marriage of Richard Hardaker (I270) and Betty Overend (I271) on 17 Jan 1770.
    • Samuel and Grace were married on the same day as William Hardaker (I239) and Hannah Airton (I844). There does not appear to be a close family link between Samuel and William however.

Research on Families of Samuel Hardakers born 1780-1790
Research on Families of Samuel Hardakers born 1780-1790
A short research paper that attempts to match five Samuel Hardakers born between 1780 and 1790 in the Guiseley and Calverley area to families that are to be found in the UK censuses of 1841 and 1851.
A partial transcript of the Rawdon Buckstone Baptist Chapel Old Accounts Book (1814-1853)
A partial transcript of the Rawdon Buckstone Baptist Chapel Old Accounts Book (1814-1853)
The original images of this transcript are available upon request (please note the specific page).

The accounts mention a Samuel Hardaker on three occasions (1815, 1822 and 1826). We are not able to know for sure which Samuel Hardaker this is, or in fact whether it is the same person in all three cases. We have guessed that it was this Samuel (#112, born 1780) because a) we know that he was alive, an adult, and living in the area at the time, and b) he has an association with Buckstone Baptist Chapel having been named their on his birth, and we suspect that his parents were buried there (Grace in 1789 and Samuel in 1811).

The three references to Samuel are the only references to a Hardaker in the Accounts Book.

  • Notes
    • It seems that Mary fell pregnant before the couple married. Since her first child, Benjamin, was born in early March 1808 it is likely that she fell pregnant in about July 1807, probably to Samuel. In fact, on 9 May 1808, Samuel, aged 28, so born about 1780, was prosecuted for 'bastardy', meaning fathering a child out of wedlock. He was recorded as being 5 ft 2 inches tall, with brown hair and brown eyes and a fresh complexion. He spent about a month in Wakefield Gaol, being discharged on 9 June.
