  • Notes
    • His mother, Sarah Jane, died in childbirth.

On 25 Sep 1914 he volunteered to join the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force for the First World War. On the Attestation Paper (hard copy in files) he gave his occupation as 'Surveyer'. He said that he had already served for 2 years in the Royal Canadian Dragoons. He originally gave an address for his wife 'Mrs S [for Samuel] Hardaker at an address in Quebec but this was crossed out and changed to care of his father at Norman Drive, Eccleshill. It seems therefore that Rosa must have moved from Canada to be with the family at Eccleshill. That is confirmed by a photo that shows Rosa with the three Hardaker sons at the start of the Great War.

Sam was buried in Deneford Churchyard near Thrapston. When the grave was dug it was found that it was already used so his father would not let Sam be buried in it and they had to dig another one.
