Notes - No christening found. I believe that in World War I he reached the rank of colour sergeant in the 1/6th West Yorkshire Regiment. I think this meant that he was the quartermaster sergeant, a non-commissioned officer in charge of supplies.
- He served in the First World War in the West Yorkshire Regiment. His regimental number was 16/142. His Medal Card at the National Archives describes his rank first as Lance Corporal, but then as 'Colour Serjeant/Company Quarter Master Serjeant'. The same source states that he first served in Egypt, arriving there on 22 Dec 1915.
