Notes - Samuel was Brian's great grandfather.
He lived at one time at Longfield House, Idle. He was a woollen cloth manufacturer, making 'vicunas' in the days of hand loom weavers. However, by an Agreement made in March 1849 Mary Bacon let the two mills and all belonging to them to a Company formed by the following local clothiers: Wm. Berry, George Stansfield, John Lee, Sen., Benj. Bland, jnr., James Stansfield, Gershom Shuttleworth, ThomasBannister, James Padgett, John Briggs, James Briggs, Wm. Booth, Jonas Fletcher, Joseph Fletcher, David Booth, Wm. Raistrick, sen., Wm Raistrick, jnr., John Ward, Joseph Raistrick, Samuel Hardaker, John Hardaker, jnr., and Henry Glover, all of Idle.
Later, in 1860 he joined with 21 other clothiers to form the New Mill Company which built a mill in New Street, Idle where they operated for some years.
The mill was still standing in 2004, part of it still a textile business operated by people called Briggs, descendants of one of the original partners. I believe it has now been pulled down and the land used for a housing development.
He was described as a 'Clothier' on mar. certificate, which he signed.
He was living at 33 Apperley Road, Idle in 1881.
