  John Lee first married his cousin, Sarah Jane, who died in childbirth having their first son Samuel. Witnesses at the marriage to Sarah Jane included Leonard Hardaker (an elder brother of Sarah Jane's) and Henry Hardaker (an elder brother of John Lee's). Both John and Sarah Jane gave Longfield House, Idle as their place of residence. He later married Rachel Stansfield Brown by whom he had two more sons. He was 34 at the time of his second marriage and a commercial traveller. At his marriage to Rachel, John was at New Street, Idle. He was a good cricketer and played for Idle. The Sheffield and Rotherham Independent of 3 April 1881 shows a J.L.Hardaker played for the 22 Colts in a match against Yorkshire, the opening match of the season to trial young players, Hardaker was out for 0, bowled Hill!
