Below are a number of web sites that contain information useful for family history research in the West Yorkshire region. Please let us know of other sites that we could add, or links that may be broken.

CalverleyInfo  A repository of genealogical and historical data concerning the villages of Calverley Parish in Yorkshire.

Yorkshire BMD  Yorkshire BMD web site.  The online indexes are not yet complete for all years and districts. The database may eventually cover all Yorkshire births, marriages and deaths from 1837.

Cheshire BMD  Cheshire BMD web site.  The online indexes are not yet complete for all years and districts. The database may eventually cover all Cheshire births, marriages and deaths from 1837.

Wharfegen Family History  The Wharfedale & Craven Genealogical Study is an ongoing project to construct the family lines and histories of individuals and families who may have lived the Wharfedale and Craven areas of Yorkshire.  Currently contains information on around 280,000 individuals.  A donation of £10 (UK) a year or a one-off donation of £25 (UK) provides access to an additional 115,000 records.

Lancashire On Line Parish Clerks  A list of parishes in the county of Lancashire at or around the end of the 19th century.

Wharfedale Family History Group

West Yorkshire Archive Service  A vast collection of useful material.  There is an online catalogue and online resources at http://www.catalogue.wyjs.org.uk/calmview/

GenUKI - The Ancient Parish of GUISELEY  Various useful information including The Horsforth census for 1795, photos of parish churches, parish church history, some church records (Guiseley church, Rawdon and Horsforth chapels).

Yorkshire Indexers - Online Records  Includes a Wiki (public access), and a member subscription database.

The National Archive  Use "Discovery" to find other archives, in Yorkshire or elsewhere. Some have catalogues searchable  on line.

Cindy’s List  An extensive list of genealogy web links.

FamilySearch.org  FamilySearch, historically known as the Genealogical Society of Utah.  The original IGI (International Genealogy Index) is available here: https://familysearch.org/search/collection/igi

FindMyPast  A UK-based online genealogy service owned, since 2007, by British company DC Thomson. The website hosts over 4 billion searchable records of census, directory and historical record information.  Searching for matching records is free, you need a (paid) subscription, or pay-as-you-go credit to view full records.

Find A Grave  Find a Grave is a commercial website that allows the public to access and add to an online database of cemetery records.  Purchased by Ancestry.com in 2013.  Contains over 150 million burial records and 75 million photos.

Genes Reunited  Another UK-based genealogy web site.  Launched in 2003 as Genes Connected.  Has records such as Monument Inscriptions (MIs) not available on some of the other popular genealogy sites.

Gravestone Photographic Resource  The Gravestone Photographic Resource project is gradually photographing and indexing England cemeteries.

Leeds University Brotherton Library, especially "Special collections".

Borthwick Institute for Archives   Located in the University Library, York, they hold many useful records including wills, bishops’ transcripts of church registers and much more.    There are search and copying services for which fees are changed.

BMD Registers  The Official Non-Conformist and Non-Parochial BMDs Service for records of birth, baptism, marriage, death and burial taken from non-parish sources.  Searches are free but you must pay to view.


UK BMD  Provides links to websites that offer on-line transcriptions of UK births, marriages, deaths and censuses. A wide range of other indexes and transcriptions are also available for most counties, these may include parish records, wills, monumental inscriptions etc.

Tracks in time Tithe Maps  The Leeds Tithe Map Project.  A tithe map is a map of an English or Welsh parish or township, prepared following the Tithe Commutation Act 1836. This act allowed tithes to be paid in cash rather than goods. The map and its accompanying schedule gave the names of all owners and occupiers of land in the parish.

Ryerson Index  The Ryerson Index is a free index to death notices appearing in Australian newspapers.
