Notes - He was reported to be a widower when he married Louisa Keer. He married three times, Louisa being his second wife. In 1891 he was with his first wife Sarah, newly married and with no children. By 1901 he had married Louisa and the four children in the household were clearly hers. He was recorded as a widower when he remarried so Sarah had died. In 1911 he was living at Stoke Newington with a wife Elizabeth aged 26. We presume therefore that Louisa had died. In the 1911 Census he was said to have been married to Elizabeth for less than a year, so none of the children in the household could have been hers. He reported he had seven children still living and three more who had died. I think we have found the seven survivers but none of the three who died, some of whom may have been by his first wife.
The family believed that Richard and his wife, presumably Elizabeth, both died at the same time, perhaps of influenza and the two little girls, at least, were taken into the homes of members of the Keer Family. That story does not seem to be quite right, as Elizabeth certainly outlived him as she was mentioned in the probate settled a month or so later. I think she probably survived for several years. However, because none of the children in the household were hers, she might well have felt it was not up to her to take care of them.
I beleive that he was the John Carter at Grantchester in 1881, a scholar aged 11, son of John and Sarah. His father was a gardener and domestic steward. I think I have found a record of his baptism with the same parents named. He recorded this father as Richard, a gardener at the time of his marriage to Louisa. I have failed to find him in the 1871 census.
