  • Notes
    • Samuel seems to have been fairly definite about his year and place of birth from the information we have from the 1851, 61, 71 and 81 UK census records. We are looking for a birth around 1810 at or near Rawdon. The following records have been carefully considered (and discounted):

      - Samuel #344 born 1808 at Yeadon: We are reasonably confident that this one married Rhoda Winterburn in 1826, and later married Elizabeth Long in 1831. Samuel and members of his extended family can be found in census records.

      - Samuel #941 born 1810 at Horsforth: We believe he married Margaret Franklin in 1831 and had at least six children with her between 1835 and 1849. This pair can also be found in the census records.

      - Samuel #1426 born at Rawdon and baptised in 1816: We consider him a possible candidate because we have a baptism date but no birth date, and it is possible that he was born several years before his baptism (his parents married in 1807). However this Samuel appears to have died in 1836 and is eliminated on that basis.

      - Samuel #215 born at Rawdon and baptised in 1818: His parents married in 1811, so he could possibly have been born that early. We don't know what happened to this Samuel, so he could be the one we are looking for, but the marriage and baptism dates involved mean that this one is unlikely to be the Samuel we are after.

Alternatively, and if we assume that Samuel's birth/baptism record is lost (or was never made), the most likely Hardaker couples known to have been having children at Rawdon around 1810 are:

      - Joseph #123 and his wife Hannah née Spencer (m. 1795)

      - William #306 and Elizabeth née Briggs (m. 1786)

      - Samuel #112 and Mary née Long (m. 1807)

Of these, we think that Samuel #112 and Mary are perhaps the most likely. They married at very much the right time for a 1810 birth and there is a neat gap between their second and third children (1809 & abt 1812) for this Samuel to fit into. The couple appear to have had some connection to the Baptist church with one of their children recorded at Buckstone Baptist Chapel and we note that this Samuel named one child, Mary, at the same place. Further, one of the children we have assigned to Samuel and Mary, Thomas, also has no known birth/baptism record.

However an assignment of this Samuel to Samuel #112 and Mary née Long remains entirely speculative at this point with no actual data yet found to support or discount this hypothesis.
