    Notes
    • There is a lot of guesswork, and a great deal of uncertainty around this part of the family tree. We have nothing definite that links this John to the marriage of John and Margaret in 1785, and very little supporting the assignment of four of the five children that we have attributed to the couple. What little evidence we do have is that we think it likely that this John died in 1831 at Bradford, aged 65, which matches exactly with a birth in 1766 (and in fact he is the only John Hardaker born within a few years of that date that we know of). Assuming this is his burial, that tells us that he survived until adulthood and moved away from Baildon where he was born at some point. Often this was as a result of an apprenticeship during the teens and early twenties. We also have a probable burial record for Margaret née Smith in 1802, Margaret reported as being 39 years old (born abt 1763), and residing at Kirkgate in central Leeds, wife of John Hardaker. Four of the five children that we think could belong to this couple were born and/or died in different locations in central Leeds between 1789 and 1794 (Vicar Lane, Kirkgate & Upper Head Row). The first child, Nancy, was born at Bradford (where John and Margaret were living when married in 1785) and one version of the baptism record (Bishop's Transcript) notes John's occupation as being a Carpenter, which matches the occupation we have from John's marriage record. Unfortunately no occupation was recorded for the baptism or burial of any of the four children fathered by a John Hardaker in central Leeds, and also no mother's name recorded, making it impossible to match these four later baptisms/burials to this couple with complete confidence.

Summarising what little we do know: John was born around the right time for a marriage in 1785 (he would have been 19 or 20); John and Margaret were at Bradford when they married and for the birth of daughter Nancy in 1786. The couple evidently moved to central Leeds at some point after that. Margaret née Smith who married John (and we can only guess that it was this John) died in 1802 at Kirkgate. This puts the couple in central Leeds at that time. We have four children born (or buried) in central Leeds (different addresses) between 1789 and 1794, some or all of which probably belong to this couple. John evidently ended up back at Bradford in 1831 and was buried there.
