  • Notes
    • James served in the First World War. He was in the Royal Garrison Artillery Regiment, 11th Siege Battery Battalion. The Siege Batteries RGA were equipped with heavy howitzer guns (6, 8 or 9.2 inch calibre), usually operating from behind the front lines. They were tasked with trying to destroy enemy artillery and supply lines by firing long range high trajectory shells.

James is buried in the Beacon War Cemetery near the village of Sailly-Laurette (part of the Somme battlefield area). There was fighting in this area between late March 1918 and early August 1918 following a German offensive, which was eventually pushed back. It seems probable that James' battalion were providing artillery support for the allied soldiers involved in this fighting, and that he was killed in action during this time.
