  • Notes
    • Lucy's first marriage was to William Hood Rowsell on 6 Sep 1859 at St Marylebone, Westminster, England. William was a bachelor, and a merchant of "full age", father John. Lucy was a minor (under 21) and a spinster, father James. Both were living in Orchard St. The marriage was witnessed by James and Sarah Child, possibly Lucy's parents.

William could be the William Hood Rowsell born in 1812 at Dillington in Somerset, father's name John. If so, he was 47 when he married Lucy who we think was about 19.

The couple had one child, a girl named Augusta Lucy Flora Hannah Hood Rowsell born in December 1860. She died aged just four months.

A Lucy Hood Rowsell (probably this Lucy) aged 20 (born about 1841) was admitted to the St Marylebone Workhouse in August 1861, recorded as Destitute, deserted by husband. A note under "Remarks" says something like "To remain, warrant has ?appeared? for arrest her husband". How Lucy ended up in India marrying Richard Hardaker just three years later is a mystery.

William Hood Roswell died in June 1881 at Somerset. This suggests that Lucy's marriage to Richard in 1864 was probably bigamous.
