    • It was an early assumption that John had married an Annie since a person of this name was buried at Guiseley on 5 May 1667, recorded as the wife of John. No marriage to an Annie has been found. The marriage to Anges Mitchell looks plausible, given that John had interests in Birstall, in Bradford parish. If that is so, perhaps Agnes was also known as Annie. Probably we shall never know for sure but I have decided to assume that Agnes and Annie were the same person. Otherwise the coincidence of the timing of the marriage is too unlikely.

Research on The Hardakers at Rawdon and Surrounding Areas: The Early Generations
The first Hardakers apparently arrived at Rawdon early in the seventeenth century. It seems likely that the family originated in Ribblesdale, in and around the Forest of Bowland. The surname was probably originally a place-name. There are a couple of hamlets at Newby, near Clapham, in the shadow of Ingleborough Hill and in upper Ribblesdale, which are now called Upper and Lower Hardacre. These might well be what remain of the place concerned.

  • Notes
    • One John was mentioned in the will of his father Roger (1667). He was a leading dissenter of his day and lived at Rawdon (Low) Hall at least between 1676 and1679 where he was host to the Rev. Oliver Heywood. He was an applicant with others for a number of meeting houses of what were to become Baptist congregations. E.g. Oliver Heywood's Northowram Register: Beeston. Barn in the occupation of Tho.Beeston of Ashold in Otley par., Timothy Collier, John Hardacres, Josias Marshall, Richard Simson, John Moore, Registered Dissenting House, Leeds, July 1690. Declaration of Indulgencies, Preachers: William Handon, James Hartley, Meeting house: John Hardaker, Place: Guiseley, Denomination: Independent (Northowram register).
