At the time of the Great Civil War, a family named Steele, from Leeds, was living at Barrowby. In July 1648 Francis Steele of Barrowby, at the close of the war, was indicted, along with Miles Dodsonof Low Hall, for collecting aid for the Earl of Newcastle in the Royalist army, and had also ridden in that army. These charges were dismissed on 11 January 1650.
