Notes |
- This marriage between James and his niece Elizabeth is known as an avunculate marriage. It is certainly illegal in the UK these days, and probably was in 1879. The fact that James did not report the name of his father for the marriage register perhaps suggests that he realised that this was socially inappropriate at the very least, or he simply could not remember. Elizabeth's father Charles does not seem to have been unhappy with the union. He had his brother as a co-executor of his will, and several of his other children evidently lived with James at different times during the late 1800s. We have to date found no evidence of any children born to James and Elizabeth.
Married:
- James Hardaker, 49 years [he was 52], Widower, Confectioner, residing Undercliffe Lane Bradford, name and occupation of father not given. Elizabeth Hardaker, 38 years, Spinster, residing Undercliffe Lane Bradford, father Charles Hardaker a Furniture Broker. Both signed. Witnesses were Samuel Rankin and Mary Hardaker [Elizabeth's younger sister].
