  • Notes
    • Mary appears to have been living at Horsforth at the time of her marriage to George in 1834. Why she was there is an unsolved puzzle. Mary's family lived around Holbeck and Hunslet just south of Leeds. We have to date been unable to establish a family connection to the (numerous) Guiseley Hardakers, but this strange reference at her wedding certainly hints strongly at there being some link.

The various census data we have from 1841 and 1851 provides quite compelling evidence that we have the right Mary Ann Hardaker marrying George Roberts. Specifically, we know that she was born about 1815 in Leeds, and that her father was named Benjamin, and was born about 1783 at Churwell (not far from Holbeck).

We also do not know the identity of the Joseph Hardaker who witnessed the marriage of Mary Ann and George. While he appears to have signed his name, we have been unable to match this signature to any other Joseph Hardaker known to be alive and in the general area at the time.
