    • We are not certain whether Joseph's mother was Sarah or Alice. He is recorded as being about two years older than brother Richard in the 1851 census, and born about 1841. On the basis of that information, it seems more likely that his mother was Sarah, who perhaps died during or shortly after the birth due to complications.
