  Our Family History - Private Burial Ground at Thackley On Apr 3 1785 Lucy Ann Smith #63, a Quaker, married Dr John Rawson #382 at Calverley St Wilfrid, Yorkshire. The ceremony was performed by a priest. This was against the Quaker rules and, after various investigations, it was decided that Lucy and her parents (William and Ann Smith) should have 'Testimonies of Denial', meaning that they were in effect excommunicated. When William Smith Rawson #802, the only son of John and Lucy, died in infancy, his grandfather wanted him buried in the Quaker graveyard at Idle. He was refused, so William established a private cemetery at Thackley for the interment of the child and other members of the family. This is a historical record of some of the families descended from William and Ann who are buried at this cemetery, as compiled by J. Horsfall Turner in 1907.

• Notes

  Edward of Idle in the Parish of Calverley, a builder and cabinet maker, died 6 August 1859 at Idle. He died intestate with effects valued at less than 100 pounds. Letters of administration were granted to his widow Ann Brown. This is a little odd as the family story was that the fortune of the wealthy Smith ancestors was passed down through the Brown family via Edward's mother Lucy Ann Smith. [5]
