Born Sam Priestley, illegitimate son of Elizabeth Priestley. The parentage of this person is somewhat speculative. The most probable explanation seems to be that he was an illegitimate son of Elizabeth Priestley, perhaps fathered by Thomas before the couple married. Whatever the circumstance, it seems clear that Thomas later 'adopted' him as a son.
