Notes - Mentioned in the will of his father Samuel.
Two Samuels married in 1690 at Guiseley: Samuel junior, who married Alice Overend, and Samuel senior, who married Mercy Crowder. Much depends on how we interpret the tags 'junior' and 'senior'. If it meant father and son, as I assume, then the only candidates I can see are this Samuel and his (presumed) father. The fact that this Samuel called his first son Samuel encourages me in the view thathe was the son of Samuel and hence this one.
I think the one who fathered the children shown here was Samuel junior. But I also believe that his wife Alice Overend died of a fever and was buried at Guiseley on 15 June 1696. So she could only have been the mother the first two of Samuel's children.
If I am right, Samuel must have married again around 1697 or 8. There is no record of such a marriage. There is, however, the possibility that there was another marriage. We know the Overends were associated with Dibb House. In the Guiseley MIs transcribed by Brian Clayton item 315 refers to the burial of John and Ephraim, sons of John Marshall of Dibb House. Both died in 1708. In the same grave was Mercy, wife of Samuel O... and of Yeadon, sister of John and Ephraim, died June ... 17... aged 46 years. I think it very likely that this Mercy Marshall married Samuel Overend, even though wehave no record of such a marriage. The only candidate for Mercy, wife of Samuel buried in the month of June the 1700s is the one on 10 June 1732.
One problem with this Mercy as a candidate for a second wife for this Samuel is that she was recorded as aged 46 at death, meaning that she was born 1685 to 6. That would make her only about 14 when John, son of Samuel was born in November 1699. Possible but unlikely. Perhaps the age at death was mis-reported or mis-transcribed? (A 9 read as a 6 on the obviously degraded tombstone would do the trick.) Or perhaps John was the son of Alice, born before 1696 but not christened till 1699.
For want of a better explanation, I have made the very speculative assumption that Samuel jnr married Mercy Marshall after his first wife Alice Overend died 1696 and that this couple were the parents of all the listed children baptised after 1695. However, there could well be another explanation that we may one day uncover.
